I’ve been afraid of needles for as long as I can remember. The lead up to our vaccinations kind of haunted me. Sure, the poke(s), but more the contemptuous climate surrounding the vaccination rollout. In such a trying time of division and selfish conspiratorial mistruths, all I could do was put my trust in the professionals. In doctors. In nurses. In epidemiologists. Like you are supposed to, you know?

The moment after each poke, overwhelmed with relief, I thanked the National Guard nurses for their professionalism, patience and historic sense of duty to help fellow human beings beat the pandemic back. It was very moving to do my tiny, little part to help myself, and those around me. Thanking them through my tears of relief.

We’re vaccinated, and slowly getting back into the swing of things. Thank you, science!
