I didn’t know the show Transparent. Leigh did, and loved it. So instantly, I was psyched to work for such a cool production company, who had a track record of doing incredible things.
Before I knew it, I was on a call with Jill (now Joey). And man, you had to buckle up. “You ready to topple the patriarchy, Draplin?” said Jill. ‘Sign me up!” I replied. Their conversation style was at a wild 100-miles-a-minute pace! We talked about where I was from, where they were from, just what it’s like to create something as big and amazing as Transparent, and plans for the future with the company. I got down to work, and within a couple weeks had the logo you are seeing below wrapped up and sent down to Hollywood.
At the time it was Jill. Now it’s “Joey.” Keep up the incredible work, Joey Soloway! It was an honor to work for you. Hell yeah!

I Love Dick Title Cards - “Pilot”
Hollywood is a funny place, and from what little I know about it, a pretty fucked up place. There’s a cutthroat quality to these producer people. And when you get on the phone with them, try to advocate for yourself, and get TALKED DOWN TO…hard. Cool way to be!
I did the first treatment, got it all approved, then spoke with a producer about doing all the episodes. And I threw out a price for my involvement, and it was met with a “We don’t have a budget like that for this.” And I don’t know, I was asking a $1000 an episode or something? Nothing all that big.
I just remember the guy saying something like, “I could just do it myself.” Okay, then. You just run into this “wall of asshole” with these people, and are expected to work for pennies on the dollar. Every time. Just disgusting.
And to be clear, this wasn’t Joey on the phone. It was one of the team of producers that it took to make a big production like this. And I get it It takes a mountain of people. And it sure is fun to run into the one who is ready to lowball you into the dirt, simply as policy.
And don’t get me going about “prop people.” Highway robbery!

I Love Dick Title Cards -
“Episode 1”
I only did one episode, due to irreconcilable differences between Mr. Meanie Producer Guy and little ol’ me.
I was so put off by the whole thing, I don’t even remember if I watched the series or not? Of if they even used the stuff in further episodes?
You just get excited to work for something cool, build it up in your head as something cool, then you get shown how “not cool” it’s going to be working with these people. Not Joey Soloway. They seemed cool as hell. Whoever I was on the phone with? Imagine being in a room the whole day with that person?
I hope they’re stuck in L.A. traffic right now, as these words go to print.
