Nixon Watches

2002–2004

(As an employee of Cinco Design.)

When I took the job with Snowboarder magazine in 2000, one of the first places I visited outside of the mag’s offices was Nixon watches. Chad Dinenna invited us down to Encinitas. Nixon represented this elevated brand to me, outpacing the predictability of the snow/skate stuff I grew up on.

I worked my two years with my buddies at Snowboarder and got an opportunity to get back up to Portland and work for the Cinco Design Office. I jumped at the opportunity, getting me out of Southern California.

And the first client I got to work on was Nixon Watches. We were traveling down to Encinitas every couple months for product meetings, hitting the trade show circuit and feeding a never ending supply of watch designs to Nixon headquarters.

Nixon Watches
Product Design

My first experience working with high-end product photography. We’d take our Nixon samples to Marcus Swanson’s Portland studio for the day to watch these images get set up, lighted and brought to life. It was awesome to experience a well-oiled photography studio. We’d take the files back to Cinco and would dig in doing the post production Photoshop retouching adding shadows, cleaning up elements and smoothing any inconsistencies.

So not only did I learn from Kirk James about how to design a watch from sketch to finished sample, but also learned how to shoot, light and touch up product for prime time in catalogs, sales sheets and online.

Nixon Watches Advertising

I loved working on these ads. The “puzzle quality” of the type and story behind the athletes were fun challenges of how to pack it all in, and, quick.
