Exit Real World

One of the first artists I met when I moved to Oregon was Jake Hauswirth. We’d come over from Bend and stay at the Sideways House in Salem, and I’d study his art projects. I remember sleeping near a full-size duct tape sculpture of a skateboarder doing an invert. Is that right? These guys were so cool. From their band, The Sideways People, to the house, to the mighty Morrow Snowboards.

When Jake and his partner started Exit Real World in Salem, we’d hit the place when we’d roll through town. Then they opened a shop on 23rd in Portland’s Nob Hill neighborhood. We reconnected in 2007, and Jake told me wild stories of the squirrels that would invade the shop. They’d come in and steal stuff, or would be all thrashed up and bleeding and whatever else.

So I made them a little mascot, which showed up stickers and all sorts of stuff. The nicest people to work for. Thank you, MIssy and Jake!
