EEEK Kit
Everything Else Enhancement Kit
EVERYTHING ELSE, EVERYTHING ELSE, EVERYTHING ELSE: When we first got the DDC book project going, I had a long wishlist readied. And man, Abrams hit all the big ones for the book. Debossed cover, Orange 021 spot color throughout the entire book, 256 pages…I was in heaven. And the coolest part, the book would be super affordable at the $39.99 retail price. I was proud as hell of that. I remember not being able to afford big design books. So I’d flip through them and leave ‘em behind. Our little book? Viciously affordable.
But of course, I went ape-shit and built a big list of “Everything Else” including a boss slipcase, mini prints, merit badge, decal sheet, bookmarks, a couple sets of fiercely limited edition Field Notes “Pretty Much Everything” edition and other goodies. Mystery items, too. That’s a pretty big pile of stuff.
And just to be clear, the DDC “Everything Else” Enhancement Kit DID NOT come with the book. You would buy the book separately. The “EEEK” kit came with a beautiful slipcase filled with a bunch of radical items designed to enhance the book!
EEEK Kit Components
12 “EEEK Kit” pieces trimmed down from a 3-color heavily-ganged-up offset printed 26" × 40" parent sheet. Absolutely NO space on the sheet was wasted. Special thanks to our buddy Tyler for going above and beyond on these bad boys.
EEEK Kit Production Notes
EEEK-001 “Decal Sheet”
We’ve always loved stickers of all types, and had to get some into the kit. Just that simple. These all-weather decals will work on just about any surface. Great for that Field Notes memo book cover, skateboard, snowboard, tackle box, car window, laptop or hard hat. “Orange 021,” “Fade To Black” and “877 Silver” screen-printed on white vinyl substrate, slammed with a die-cut “WHAM!” that allows for simple “Peel-’n-Stick” usage. Trimmed to 8" × 10" in dimension. Printed by the good people of Brewery Outfitters, using top-secret American sources.
EEEK-002 “Merit”
Sew it on, or iron it on. Your choice. Great for that backpack, jean jacket, book tote, sweatshirt, awards sash, yard coat, duffle bag, ball cap or beanie that needs a little hit of DDC branding, to take it over the edge. “Fade To Black” and “Way White” embroidery on “Overload Orange” base cloth. 2-1/4" in diameter. Manufactured by the good people of Brewery Outfitters, using top-secret American sources. Patch packaging is “877 Silver” and “Fade To Black” offset-printed on “Way White” uncoated poster paper. Trimmed to 3-3/4" × 10" in dimension. Printed by our buddy Tyler, right here in Portland, Oregon.
EEEK-003 “Certificate of Authenticity”
Let this unassuming page commemorate this whole project. One final signature and date, to go and put a bow on the whole ordeal. All these years on and off the jobs, and a chance to slam it all into a book? Mind-blowing. Thank you for believing in the DDC. Thank you for years of reading our blog, buying our merch, using Field Notes, coming out to our speaking fiascos, writing in and sharing inspiration. What an incredible ball of wax, these last twenty-some years, culminating in that book. “Orange 021” and “877 Silver” offset-printed on “Way White” poster paper. 1-1/2" diameter foil embossed seal, painstakingly placed. Trimmed to 8" × 10" in dimension. Printed by our buddy Tyler, right here in Portland, Oregon.
EEEK-004 “Mini Print Set”
An assortment of mini prints from our coffers. “Space Shuttle Tribute”, “Thick Lines Sunrays”, “Thick Lines Valley”, “DDC BOOK 73-cent Stamp”, “Silver, Shimmering Dad” and “DDC vs. Lancaster, Pennsylvania”. “Orange 021”, “Fade To Black” and “877 Silver” offset-printed on “Way White” uncoated poster paper. Trimmed to 8" × 10" in dimension with the exception of “DDC. vs. Lancaster, Pennsylvania”, which is 8" × 8" in dimension. Printed by our buddy Tyler, right here in Portland, Oregon. He wouldn’t give up the printing source, either. And of course, I tried to procure it many times. Printers, man.
EEEK-005 “Bookmark Set”
Bookmarks? For books? I know, I know...here we go, right back to the Dark Ages, right? Settle down, TechFart.com. I mean, who the hell even reads anymore? All cynicism aside, we’ll be the first to raise our hands and proudly say, “We read. Books. Words on paper. And we need bookmarks to hold our place!” Stick that in your USB porthole, Kindle. “Orange 021” and “Fade To Black” on “Way White” uncoated poster paper. Trimmed to 2-1/2" × 10" in dimension. These useful things were printed by our buddy Tyler right here in Portland, Oregon.
EEEK-006 “Production Notes”
It’s kind of weird to be detailing the page that details the project, right? But here goes: This page details each piece of the “Everything Else” Enhancement Kit. There you go. I guess I just hope that people still care where things come from, and all the steps it took to make something. I savor this stuff, and love getting it down in ink, forever. “Orange 021” and “Fade To Black” on “Way White” uncoated poster paper. Trimmed to 8" × 10" in dimension. Printed by our buddy Tyler, right here in Portland, Oregon.
EEEK-007 “DDC Pinback”
You know the little one-inch punk rock buttons that rose to prominence in the last of couple decades, right? We’re all for ’em and have quite the collection. Even have a Dr. Ron’s button machine to make our own. But with these? We wanted something a little bit different. So we went digging and found a 7/8" pinback, just like the political pinbacks of yesteryear. The real deal. “Orange 021” and “Way White” on a stamped metal pinback. Traditional “circle” shape is 7/8" in diameter. Manufactured by the good people of Brewery Outfitters, using top-secret American sources.
EEEK-008 “Mini Print Set Belly Band”
This little bad boy wraps the mini prints. Nice and tight. “Orange 021” and “Fade To Black” on “Way White” uncoated poster paper. Scored four times. Final folded piece is 3-3/4" × 10” in dimension. Printed by our buddy Tyler, right here in Portland, Oregon.
EEEK-009 “Pretty Much Everything” Slipcase
Oh man, pulling this one off was a beast! So many starts, and so many stops. Many, many doors were slammed in our face. It’s funny how fast-talking salespeople will promise you the world, and you take ’em up on it, and then you get silence. Heartbreaking. May those who wronged us be haunted with the orangest of nightmares, the remainder of their paltry existence. “Orange 4196” Brillianta cloth, wrapped around 0.60" U-board for uniform thickness. Spine is hit with a brutal, double-hit, 1-color application of “Fade To Black” foil. Final slipcase dimension is 10-11/32" × 1-5/32" × 8-1/4". Proudly made in the U.S.A. by R.R. Donneley. “Somewhere in Wisconsin” is what I was told, but specifics were hard to come by. Thank you, Midwest! And the last time I checked, it wasn’t called “Lake Wisconsin”. Just the facts, people, just the facts.
EEEK-010 Standard Issue “Pretty Much Everything” Field Notes Three-Packs
They turned out pretty boss, right? Right. So proud of every little aspect of these books. The covers are Neenah Royal Sundance Linen “Eclipse Black” 80# canvas covers slammed with a brute-force hammering of “Overload Orange” foil. Inside cover and inside back cover hit with “Silver 877” metallic ink, then an overprinting of “Orange 021”! Wow! The innards are Neenah Astrobright “Orbit Orange” 60# smooth text with a dotted graph grid printed in a fine mist of the most evil “Fade To Black” ink ever to hit orange paper. The cover was printed on a 20" Heidelberg Speedmaster 52 2-color press. The books were bound by a Heidelberg ST350 “Stitchmaster” 8-pocket saddle stitcher, with appreciation to Samuel Slocum, George W. McGill and William J. Brown, the “Founding Fathers of the Staple.” Then painstakingly scored on 30" Rollem TR30 scoring machine. The corners were precisely rounded to a 3/8" (9.5mm) radius on a Southworth Round Corner Machine. The dotted graph grid is 3/16" × 3/16" (4.5mm × 4.5mm). The memo book dimensions are 3-1/2" × 5-1/2" (8.9cm × 13.9cm). FIELD NOTES uses only the Futura typeface family (Paul Renner, 1927) in its materials. All FIELD NOTES memo books are printed and manufactured in the U.S.A. Proudly printed by our buddy Tyler at Stevens Integrated Solutions, Portland, Oregon.
