John Hodgman

I always loved John Hodgman’s parts on The Daily Show, and those classic Apple vs. Windows shorts just might’ve been the first commercials I actually enjoyed and looked forward to. Those appearances led me to his two first books, The Areas of My Expertise and More Information Than You Require and I devoured those handily. So when I got to meet John at a Chris Ware show in New York City in 2015, it was a real jolt to the colt. Later that night, at a party at Chip Kidd’s Batman lair, we got to talk to John again and trade notes on where we were from and what I do out west.

A year later, John hits me up to do a poster for his upcoming Judge John Hodgman tour, and I jump at the chance! That quickly turns into a whole line of supporting merch for his Judge John Hodgman podcast, live shows and merch offering. Scroll way down to see all that wildness.

And a year after those goodies, John hit me up to do the cover for his new memoir, Vacationland. I was ecstatic. A real novel, by a real comedian with a gigantic publisher pushing it out into the world. That went swimmingly, and John had me back to do his follow-up, Medallion Status. Another blast.

But here’s the kicker: Not only was John offering up great ideas to push the comps I’d send him along (The guy has chops!) but the best part about John? He was kind. And patient. And completely supportive of what I do, and went to bat for me on timing and fees and all the official stuff.

Five years back I took Mom to see his live Judge John Hodgman show at the Aladdin Theater here in Portland. We laughed our asses off the whole time, and after the show he was so kind to her. What a great night.
