I’ve always been inspired by the Stars & Stripes. By the idea that ANYONE can come to this nation, work hard and make it. This romantic idea about The American Dream, right? And it’s not lost on me that this is a problematic thing. The American flag means so many things to so many people. Sometimes, it’s used as a beacon of safety. Sometimes, it’s used as a shining light of justice. Sometimes, it’s used as a peacekeeper.

And let’s not forget, ever, that sometimes it’s used as a weapon. As a symbol of oppression, aggression and stubbornness. That’s problematic. That makes me uneasy. That’s not where my heart is, or has ever been.

My family came here from Poland in the late 1800s. And no one really knows the story of why. I like to think America offered the Drapala family opportunities. All the way back to my youth, the stars & bars represented a land of opportunity, liberty, freedom of speech, the fight for equality, the fight for fairness, the fight for progress, scientific innovations, and doing right by your neighbor, and neighbors in countries near us and far away.

And that’s what this design about.
