THE OCEAN FREAKS ME OUT: You have to understand, I was raised on lakes, wading in ponds and jumping cricks. Lake Michigan was our ocean, with a distant, wild, exotic Wisconsin somewhere on the other side of the horizon. So when I first stepped foot in the big waters of Florida, getting a little taste of the salt water as a kid, knowing…BIG SHIT lived out in those waters. Fast forward to my 29th year living on the beach in SoCal. 2002. Working at a snowboard magazine, and a colleague stepped on an urchin, and had to get the whatever-the-hell-they-weres dug out? No. Not this guy. I don’t even like bathtubs.

“Oceanics” is our little tribute to that big ocean. A thick-lined wave, crashing, with the sun beaming down. Nothing more, nothing less. I don’t go into the ocean. It’s not ours. Last time I checked, I don’t have gills? I’ll say it again: It’s not ours, so don’t be bummed when a shark bites you in half.

I gaze upon it with great respect, happy enough with the idea of mystery and life teeming underneath those waves.
