There was a gravel-voiced cook I met my first summer, and I’ll NEVER forget what he told me this one run. I was down in the dumps, bummed on the prospect of spending my entire summer washing dishes on those big trains. He sensed my melancholy, and simply said this, “You’ll get through this summer, and you’ll go back home. But just know, Alaska will always be a part of you.”

I think about that every time I think about my time up in Alaska. Thank you, Chris.
