KINDA SAD ABOUT THIS ONE: Today’s the last Space Shuttle liftoff, and it’s making me sad. I was raised with that vessel cemented into my head, and the frontiers it could take us to. The graphics, the astronauts, the Bicentennial logo on that big hangar, the Helvetica Bold on the wings. All of it. Even the Lego set. Damn. And just a couple minutes ago I checked the CNN to see today was the last liftoff. Couldn’t help but feel a little sad about it. Anyhoo, what you are seeing above it a logo I made last year for the “final year logo contest,” which I of course missed by a mile, horribly. Oh well. I’m they picked some Corel Draw nightmare, so I’m not gonna go looking for the link. That’s my submission for it, that I never formally submitted. Oh well. - - - - SOME OF THE BEST TYPE, EVER: CO-OP!(Thank you, Joe Shephard!) - - - - NEXT STOP, AWESOME: When was the last time you visited Ledouxville? Tomorrow night! Bend, Oregon. Hottest ticket in town. I’ve got a deck in the deal, and hope it raises a nice mint for the Division Street Skate Park Project, which, I would’ve used a bunch, if it was 1993. Etcetera. Here’s the deck I made for their 2009 show. So fun. Had a blast painting it up. - - - - ON THE PLAYER: 01. Bill Withers - Bill Withers Greatest Hits (Gift of the Leigh Foundation.) FYI, it wasn’t THE last shuttle launch, just the last one for Discovery. Endeavor is launching in April, and I’m going to see it, if you want to come. Posted by: Peter Baker on 02/24/11 at 8:05 PM
dont worry the endeavor shuttle still has one more mission Posted by: gerry on 02/24/11 at 9:14 PM
I’ll co-sign on Mr. Carney’s skills. The heat-sensitive disc for Brothers was a nice touch. I was rooting for him and Rob Jones in the packaging category, and they both won! Posted by: Allan Lorde on 02/25/11 at 1:24 AM
Don’t be too sad, this was just the last launch of Discovery. There are actually two more launches before the whole thing is mothballed. You can also send your mug into space if you want. You know I did. Posted by: schille on 02/25/11 at 4:06 AM
I think there are two more missions STS-134 and 135 should really try to get to one of them. Posted by: Colin on 02/25/11 at 6:03 AM
Fear not… There are 2 more shuttle launches planned - then it is done. BTW, hugely inspired by your work! Posted by: Gary on 02/25/11 at 6:14 AM
You should most definitely make some merch with that space shuttle graphic on it. I absolutely love everything about it. Posted by: Christopher on 02/25/11 at 6:57 AM
Dude, This may be a little premature. This is the final mission for Discovery, but NASA has another mission scheduled for both Endeavor and Atlantis in June: http://www.nasa.gov/missions/highlights/schedule.html But, the Shuttle does rock and the program will definitely be missed! That’s a fantastic logo. Totally appropriate, and it brings me back to elementary school, sitting in the dark in our auditorium, watching the first test flights and launches. Check out the fourth post here about NASA designers wearing white lab coats so the color of their clothing wouldn’t reflect onto pasteboards: http://observatory.designobserver.com/entry.html?entry=2047 I think I’m going to buy a lab coat. The astronauts actually pulled up to the shuttle in the old 60s’ astro van. Pretty cool if you ask me. A vlogger on youtube recorded it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_profilepage&v=BhqxZisO-4s#t=327s Posted by: Jules on 02/27/11 at 3:33 PM
That space shuttle graphic is awesome. Totally fitting with the type and colors. I can’t help but be excited though. Sometimes when things happen you just have to look at marvels of human existence and think… what comes next? Probably just more murder, torture and political espionage with the occasional feat of mankind. Ahh I kiiiid I kiiiiiid. Posted by: Timothy on 02/27/11 at 5:01 PM
Actually, Michael Carney is the older brother of the drummer. Posted by: Andrew on 03/07/11 at 10:13 AM
