STILL STREAMING: Freak out on the new Flaming Lips doubleheader for a couple more days. Get wild with it. - - - - COVERED IN VAGINA FUR, OR SOMETHING: I ordered the crazy ass deluxe edition, too, just for the fuck of it. I mean, I’ll do put the iTunes through the ringer once they are available, and the vinyl version for the collection. Don’t take my word for it. Take Wayne’s. - - - - CAN’T STOP THE GUSHING: Bravo, Mr. Salisbury! You have one hell of a gig. Oklahoma’s George Salisbury is the Lips’ graphic designer, and man, I don’t even know where to start on that one. That is one hell of a calling. Keep up the fantastic stuff! I got a handshake from him a couple years back at Bonnaroo, all drunk on backstage beer. I knew EXACTLY who he was, and prob’ly freaked the guy out pretty good. I mean, come on, the designer for the Lips? I knew exactly who he was. The incomparable Steven Drozd was there with him, and all I could think about was about George’s use of Helvetica Black. Ha. My love for this band has had me wondering about Mooneyham and Wayne’s folky type and WhoIsParticle for a big part of my life. I’m such a fan of this stuff. So cool. That’s what you are seeing above. That’s the shit that got me, and got me bad. Wayne’s folky type! To this day, some of the best shit I’ve ever seen. My Howard Finster. This stuff changed me. I mean, here I was, so blown away by the masters of design, and their corporate formalism, typographic rules, and straightforward communicating and then to see this…just…so full of color, spirit and completely unlike anything I’d ever ever ever seen. Same goes for their tunes. This is why I love these guys like I do. I’m just glad they can pull it off. All of them down there in OKC. We’re lucky to have ‘em. - - - - TURN UP THE WAYNE. HERE’S ONE COLIN FOUND: Man, Wayne can spin one hell of a yarn! - - - - THIS WEDNESDAY, HERE IN OUR LITTLE PORTLAND: Naked bike riders for the Flaming Lips! My clothes are staying on, so just relax, truckers. - - - - JUST WHAT WE NEEDED: Be alive, Motherfuckers! The backing video from the Lips’ festiveChristmas On Mars freak out tent show last summer! Mr. Salisbury, again. There Are 3 Comments
Mr Salisbury has a great gig indeed. Had the pleasure of going to school with him and who knew he would end up with the job (can you really call it that?) of a lifetime. The only person I can think of with a sweeter gig is also a friend and consequently schoolmate, Bradley Beesley, who by proximity, combined with talent made a career creating art with these guys. Check any of their video and film credits to see his work. Two talented and deserving guys with jobs better than most. Posted by: B Taylor on 09/21/09 at 2:10 PM
Lips make life better, that’s for damn sure. Posted by: Breck Chumley on 09/21/09 at 7:50 PM
I dig the artwork on the new album, but was a little disappointed when they added the type. Woulda been cooler if it were just the image and the band name and record title were slapped on a separate sticker or something. Just sayin’. Nerd shit, I know. Thoughts?
