It snowed in Portland, man. A “Once-A-Winter-And-The-Town-Goes-To-Pot” kind of thing. A crippled city. Bumper cars on black ice streets. Gotta enjoy it while it’s on the ground. Couple more degrees and it’ll be gone. Our dilemna. - - - - Something we thought about today, as we stood in the snow out back watching Gary do his dirty deeds: Snow Days as a kid. Aw, Gaylord cancelled! And Mancelona! Even East Jordan. What about us? There was nothingā€“absolutely nothing-as good as a snow day off from school. The best. Sighs of relief. Anticipation. Fingers crossed for states of emergency and disaster areas concerning Old Man Winter and the lake-effect cards he was dealing Northern Michigan. Please say “Central Lake Public Schools.” I remember being so tired, getting ready for school on a any given day. Not on a snow day, though. No way. It was as if that little ticker on the tv announcing the cancellations was a mainlined shot of pure awesomeness, cuz, as soon as the Snow Day was announced, I’d be going over what I wanted to do for the day off. Sledding? Fort building? TV? Legos? Drawing? “There it is! The official announcement. Bellaire fell. Ellsworth! And us!” I remember coming in from a long morning playing in the snow and the elements, to a hearty lunch made by my mom. Cold fingers and runny noses. Wet hair. Ill-fitting boots. Mismatched gloves. The best. I remember all this. I hold it very close to me. And, you still had the rest of the afternoon to slay before it got dark. There Are 4 Comments
Aaron man, you just transported me back in time. There’s nothing that matches the anxiety of waiting for your school to be called. Go to God damned Les Schwab and buy some God damned snow tires you cheap bastards. XOXOXO Posted by: Cris on 01/18/07 at 8:36 AM
God I have such memories of this too. Never to this day have I stared at a television screen so intently! But we had foggy days, not snow days. Not as fun. Several times in winter, when an especially thick Tule fog set in (10 feet visibility causing freeway pile-ups into the high double digits), we’d watch the painfully slow ticker for our school name to appear. But at best our bus was delayed 3 hours. Never did we get a full day home from school! Posted by: Michelle on 01/18/07 at 8:11 PM
Snow in Portland: It was almost entertaining to watch all the clips on the news where cars were sliding all over the place. Glad you were raised in the great white north, able to handle any all-weather driving. Snow days in Central Lake: Great times for all of us. Shoveling tons of snow and having happy, happy kids. Now in Traverse City; we have the big-time John Deere with the snow blower; we now live in yet another snow belt; and I love the tons of snow…..finally accumulating each day. The trend here now with little kids is when the forcast is for heavy snow, they wear their pajamas inside-out and backwards to bed, in hopes of a snow day (handed out sparingly these days). I hope when you are here next month you get to experience a few heavy snowstorms……maybe dad will let you use the dam John Deere on the drive. Bring all of Gary’s clothes….get him boots, too.
