Leigh and I were on the road a couple months back for the Adobe MAX fiasco. Had an incredible time again, our tenth running of graphic design’s greatest conference. We drove the orange gas pig down. And somewhere in the blurry haze of frenzied driving around Los Angeles, we hit a 99-cent store. Was looking for paper clips to clip price tags to the posters in the booth. Our last little acquisition before the hordes would overtake us.

And in that 99-cent store, I came across a jumbo highlighter. Eight inches long! An inch in diameter! Whoa! This exists? It does! Just what I was fuckin’ looking for. Dazzled, frazzled and fluorescentazzled, I stood there marveling at the thing for 10-15 seconds then frantically grabbed as many as they had on the rack and hit the check out.

During my Adobe talk the next day, I whipped one out into the crowd. And while that fluorescent baton was dangerously spinning out into the void above the crowd, I swore a blood oath to this simple promise: My name is Aaron James Draplin, son of Jim and Lauren, of North America, and someday I will have my very own big-boned highlighter.
